ORIGINS

In 2001, Manga Entertainment released a groundbreaking anime film called "Blood: The Last Vampire" to rave reviews and critical accolades. Based on an original manga created by Benkyo Tamaoki and utilizing a masterful blending of CG and traditional cel animation, the film helped pave the way for a new technological era in anime, while at the same time offering a thought provoking, ambiguous merging of suspense, action and horror. With no backstory and even less of a conclusive ending, "Blood: The Last Vampire" left much unanswered while raising new questions.

A long-time fan of Japanese animation, writer-director Brian Sullivan found the enigmatic Saya and her fight against an ancient evil an intriguing concept. Adapting the characters and situations presented in the original anime, Brian wrote an original short screenplay for the project, conceptualized as a live-action continuation of the original story and presenting Saya and her struggle in a more contemporary setting.

The selection of relative newcomer Molly White to portray the title character proved to be the production's greatest asset, as her uncanny physical/facial resemblance to the animated Saya lends a high degree of credibility while providing a solid bridge between the original anime and our own live-action feature.

Though still in the pre-production phase, we invite you to check back for further updates and appreciate your interest in our work. More info to come!

CHARACTERS

SAYA

Though her appearance is that of a young woman, Saya’s true age is unverified. Employed by a secret branch of the United States government responsible for hunting down vampiric demons known as Chiroptera, Saya’s overall disdain for humankind and preference for solitude keeps her handlers and fellow agents at bay. She has no apparent weakness to sunlight but becomes distressed when she encounters religious paraphernalia. Her anti-Chiroptera motivations remain a mystery, but her determination and dedication to their extermination is absolute. She is never without her ubiquitous katana, whose exacting blade she prefers over more sophisticated, modern weaponry.

DAVID

Saya's primary handler and a senior agent of the anti-Chiroptera task force. Though his main function is to monitor Saya and provide logistic support in her operations, David has been known to break protocol when the occasion calls for it, often times putting himself in harms way to provide her with physical backup in times of need. Despite Saya's general aloofness, she and David share a bond of trust forged over the decades of working together.

CHIROPTERA

Outwardly, the Chiroptera resemble normal humans, but take on nightmarish, bestial forms when agitated. In human guise they have supernatural abilities that include augmented strength and speed; when transformed, they are impervious to normal weapons and can only be killed by massive blood loss caused by a single, powerful stroke of an exceptional blade or similar weapon. Chiroptera feed off human blood and require it for sustenance. They exist outside of time and are ageless. Their exact numbers are unknown.
